Acer Aspire 5738Z Review

If there is one thing we like about Acer the most it is their ability to delivery the latest technology while undercutting the competition on price without sacrificing reliability. The Acer Aspire 5738Z does not let us down bringing DDR3 memory and high definition (HD) to mainstream laptops.

Currently priced at just £340 you might think this is a budget laptop lacking any computing power but the truth is this could not be further from the truth. Powered by an Intel Pentium Dual Core running at 2.0 GHz the processor is no slouch and will easily tackle any office or media programs without breaking a sweat. All other laptops in this price range either have only single core processors or slower budget dual core processors so you are getting a real bargain with the 5738Z.

Perhaps even more impressive is the 3GBs of DDR3 1066MHz memory. Much faster then you find even in mid ranged laptops these days and even faster then our favourite laptop at this price range the Dell Inspiron 15. This will give the laptop a very nice performance boost and even improve the graphics performance as the integrated graphics card uses some of this memory.

The graphics card is the Intel GMA 4500M, a high end integrated graphics card but of course far off the performance of dedicated graphics cards. It should be perfect for all office apps, watching HD movies and pretty much anything else with the exception of the latest computer games. If you need a laptop for gaming then this is not for you.

Another great feature is the latest LED high definition 15.6" HD 1366 x 768 high-brightness (220-nit) screen. The LED backlit screen is the latest in screen technology giving you a sharper crisper and brighter image while reducing power consumption and therefore increasing battery life. We are very impressed to find such a great screen in a laptop of this price.

The final impressive feature is the Dolby surround sound which is an upmarket high quality sound provider and should boost the laptops sound quality. While enjoying your High Definition sound the 160GB hard drive should be hard to fill up for most users.

You can expect to find all the usuals too, such as a DVD-RW, a wireless card, a card reader and so forth, but the additional bonus is the numerical keypad making this laptop perfect for office applications such as Microsoft Excel that require a lot of numerical data entry.

Overall we are tremendously impressed with the Acer Aspire 5738Z, it comes close to beating our favourite the Dell Inspiron 15 only falling short due to its less powerful graphics, but if you are not planning to game on your laptop then the Acer is a fine alternative to the Dell. It will perfectly suite almost all users apart from computer gamers. Excellent as an office, multimedia or student laptop we award the Acer Aspire 5738Z 91%.
